Windows XP - The Install Continues

I've finally got round to installing Sun's excellent VirtualBox software under Windows 7 on my main laptop (now that it has recovered from power supply failure).

The first virtual machine I wanted was a fresh, clean installation of Windows XP ready for some development work.

Imagine my surprise then when many hours later, it is still installing!

Why? Well that will be to do with the rather extreme number of updates that Windows Update is pushing down.

Firstly I was missing Service Pack 3 as I hadn't done any XP installations in quite a while. But even then, there are another 187MB of downloads, most of which are classed as critical. And that is without needing any hardware updates.

Phew! Still I suppose we can be thankful that Microsoft are still putting out fixes at least security ones anyway.

Selecting contents of textbox in VBA UserForm

Although Microsoft provide an auto-select feature for text boxes in User Forms (used for custom user interfaces in Microsoft Office applications), it only works if the user TAB's into a text box and not if they click with the mouse (which, of course, is more common).

To get round this, you can trap the MouseUp event for each text box object like this...

'***
'* Auto select all text and copy text to clipboard
'* @param tb OBJECT The user form object to operate on
'* @return NULL
'***
Private Sub selectTb(tb As Object)
    With tb
        .SelStart = 0
        .SelLength = Len(tb)
        .Copy
    End With
End Sub

' Select and copy to clipboard any of the fields as they are clicked in
Private Sub tbRole_MouseUp(ByVal Button As Integer, ByVal Shift As Integer, ByVal X As Single, ByVal Y As Single)
    selectTb Me.tbRole
End Sub
' ... Repeat for each text box object ...

Add this code to your Form in VBA with a MouseUp function for each text box object you want it to operate on.

  • How to use JQuery (or other libraries) in a bookmarklet! With an example of making textarea's resizeable. Chris Adams provides a template for creating your own bookmarklet and explains some of the reasons you might want to use this technique for development and testing. He also points out some gotcha's to be careful of.

Microsoft Office wakes up to the rest of the world!

Wow, how things have changed. A year or so ago, Microsoft wouldn't have been all that interested in cross-platform compatibility let alone cross-browser. And yet now they are making sure that Office Online services are, at least to a limited extent, cross-browser and cross-platform.
To quote them:

The Office Web Apps work with some of the most widely used browsers, and we officially support:
  • Internet Explorer 7 and 8
  • Firefox 3.5 on Windows, Mac and Linux
  • Safari 4 on Mac
 Of course, that still leaves many enterprise users (IE6) and others (Google Chrome, etc.) with perhaps less than the best experience but it is certainly a good step forwards.
